    (via The Desert Review) Brawley — Myron D. Witter fifth graders held their first Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fair Thursday evening in the Barbara Worth Junior High gym to finish off three months of hard work and fun. The gym was filled with projects from 90 fifth grade students in seven categories ranging from physical, biological, environmental, and more.

    Five Imperial County elementary schools received the 2016 Gold Ribbon Schools Award from the state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson in April. The five local schools are: Margaret Hedrick Elementary School, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School and McCabe Elementary School in El Centro; and Dogwood Elementary School in Heber. The state honored 780 schools total in the state.

    The track and field teams from Central Union and Southwest High schools met at Eagle Field for an Imperial Valley League contest and competitive display of athleticism here on Thursday afternoon. Both the Spartans and the Eagles fared well at the meet despite competing against a strong westward wind at times.

    As many know, Kermit the Frog sings, “It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green” but Imperial County Child Abuse Prevention Council reminds residents, it is never easy being a parent and you are not alone. The CAP Council’s 37th annual Children’s Fair thrilled young and formerly young alike at Bucklin Park on Saturday. When launched by founders Peggy Calvin and Sue Talley there was just 12 vendors and 200 children but it has grown to 100 vendors and an attendance of 15,000, noted Yvette Garcia, CAP Council executive director.
