School-based physical therapy is a service that helps students with disabilities who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP). It is designed to support students so they can take part in their school day and learning activities. Before physical therapy can begin, a licensed physical therapist will do an assessment to see if services are needed.
In schools, physical therapists focus on helping students move safely and independently in their environment. This may include working on balance, coordination, and mobility, as well as supporting the use of adaptive equipment or assistive technology. They also work with teachers and school staff to make sure the student has the support they need throughout the school day.
Physical therapy is provided only when it is necessary for a student to be able to participate and succeed at school. If the IEP team has already tried other strategies and resources and feels that physical therapy is still needed, a referral can be made for services.
