K12HSN: California K-12 High Speed Network
Overview
The California K-12 High Speed Network (K12HSN) is a program funded by the California Department of Education administered by the Imperial County Office of Education.
K12HSN provides network connectivity, Internet services, teaching and learning application coordination, and videoconferencing coordination and support for California’s K-12 public schools.
Corporation for Education Networking Initiatives (CENIC)
A key component of successfully managing the K-12 High Speed Network is working with the Corporation for Education Networking Initiatives in California (CENIC) in order to ensure that K-12 “node sites” across the state have adequate bandwidth to meet the needs of the districts and schools that they serve.
K12HSN provides county offices and districts with Network Diagnostic Services in order to assist in the identification of network issues that impair effective use of the bandwidth available. Real-time monitoring of the Network’s status and on-going updates to the connectivity information are also available using DataLINK and Solar Winds.
In order to increase the E-rate discounts that are available to subsidize the State’s expense for Network’s circuits, K12HSN also engages in an annual campaign to collect Letters of Agency (LOA) to increase the number of districts participating in the Statewide E-rate consortium.
Program Goals
K12HSN was established in an effort to increase learning opportunities for all K-12 students while expanding professional development and information resources to teachers and school administrators.
The goal of the program is to provide adequate bandwidth to all schools and districts in California, to assist educators in leveraging the technology to improve teaching and learning, and to enhance access to resources via videoconferencing, or the Network in general.
