National PTA and NCPC Team Up for School Safety
A 2000 survey by the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) found that, although as many as 75 percent of children have been victims of bullying, only 20 percent of parents see bullying as a serious or very serious problem for their children. Bullying is just one of the many school safety issues of which parents must be aware. Now National PTA is calling on parents to take a more active role in the safety and security of their children’s schools. National PTA is collaborating with NCPC on the Be Safe and Sound campaign, a program that encourages parents to partner with school administrators to ensure the safety and security of their children while at school.
The Be Safe and Sound program is an initiative of NCPC conducted in collaboration with National PTA and other NCPC partners, including The Allstate Foundation, ASSA ABLOY, Nextel Communications, and Security Industries Association. The goal of Be Safe and Sound is to engage and educate parents, policymakers, school officials, community members, and students and to provide them with expert-based school safety and security principles.
The toolkit includes all the materials and resources needed to develop policies and procedures related to violence prevention, positive school climate, and improved security in schools.
