Janet Otter, Teacher for the Severely Handicapped

Janet Otter, Teacher for the Adult Life Skills Program and instructional assistants, Luz Guerrero, Maria Velarde and Vanessa Thomas, work as a team at Imperial Valley College in Imperial, CA.  Janet began teaching children with learning disabilities for Brawley Elementary School District in 1993.  She then decided to serve students with severe disabilities and came to work for ICOE in August 1994. 

Janet believes that it is her life mission to work with her students and encourage them to reach their full potential.  She feels she connects with the children as individuals and sees her role as challenging yet at the same time very rewarding. Janet has the energy and vitality to give her students the educational opportunities they deserve. 

She holds a CLAD Credential which qualifies her to teach English Language Learners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.  This is in addition to the Multiple Subject Professional Clear and Specialist Professional Clear Teaching Credentials that she has obtained from San Diego State University. 

Janet is currently serving as the President of the Imperial County Office of Education Teachers' Association as well as a CTA State Council Representative.  She is a native of Imperial County who returned to the valley to give back to her local community.  Janet resides in Brawley and is the mother of four adult children, one granddaughter and one grandson.
