Milagros Dizon, Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program at Sunflower Elementary School provides services to students from preschool to first grade from age three to seven years old. It provides basic training on language development with emphasis on American Sign Language, basic academics such as reading readiness, reading, mathematics, motor skill development, speech, speech reading, auditory training, rhythm, writing, spelling, social studies, and science.
Students who are capable of meeting the regular classroom academic requirements are mainstreamed in academic subjects and the rest are mainstreamed in non-academic areas. They participate in all school activities and holiday celebrations. Sign language interpreter services are provided when students are mainstreamed. ICOE Speech Specialist, Dinah Yeager, comes into the classroom once a week to promote speech services and an occupational therapy assistant, Mr. McDonald, provides motor skills development once a week.
When students reach the second grade level, they move to King Elementary School and stay there until 5th Grade. Mila was honored as "Teacher of the Year" by ACSA (Association of California School Administrators) for the 2003-2004 school year.
