Robert Willingham, Teacher for the Severely Handicapped

Robert has been teaching in the Special Day Class at Martin Luther King, Jr. since 1991.  He holds two California teaching credentials:  a Multiple Subject Professional Clear Credential and Specialist Professional Clear Credential.  Additionally, he holds a CLAD Credential, which qualifies him to teach English Language Learners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. 

Robert and his Instructional Assistants, Maribel Espinoza and Josephine Richmond, believe, as does the State and Federal Government, that academics are not beyond the abilities of their students.  Therefore, a visitor to Robert's classroom will find the students engaged in meaningful learning grounded in the Core Curriculum with a heavy emphasis on English Language Learning and Literacy. 

It is the intention of Robert and his staff to make the class operate as close as possible to the way that general education classes operate.  Robert's assistants, Maribel, Diana, and Josephine, are an integral part of the class and are equally adept at teaching functional skills, handling disruptive behavior, or providing direct instruction in the Core Curriculum; Robert is justifiably proud of his staff.
