Teacher Information

Rosie Chew, Teacher for the Severely Handicapped, ACSA "Teacher of the Year," 2005-2006

I am married, have five daughters, two sons-in-law, three grandsons and one granddaughter.  I have been working in education officially since April 1981.  My experience started with ICOE when I was hired as a migrant aide at Calexico High School. 

Due to budget cuts, I was then transferred to Holtville High School where I worked for a year.  I was then hired to work in special education in 1985 (after a brief layoff) and began work at the Imperial Valley Center For Exceptional Children in El Centro.  After working there for two years, I transferred to a county class at Kennedy Middle School.  In January of 1991, I moved to the ICOE Speech Department to work as a speech aide. 

When I completed my B.A. degree, I was hired as a teacher at IVCEC for the 1995-1996 school year.  In 1996, I moved to a community-based classroom at Rockwood School and I've been there ever since.  I enjoy working in special education. 

Although I find it challenging, both physically and mentally, I know I make a difference in my students' lives and education.  I set high expectations for my students because they all have potential to learn.
