Addressing Assistive Technology in the IEP

  • The IEP team must consider whether there is any possibility that the student may need AT.
  • Once AT devices and services have been properly considered for a student, the IEP team will recommend an AT evaluation of the student by a qualified professional.
  • When the evaluation is completed to everyone’s satisfaction, the resulting recommendations should state the need for AT devices and services.
  • AT devices should be described in detail in the IEP. AT services, such as training, maintenance and repair of devices, should be addressed in the IEP.
  • In addition, the student’s use of the device should be incorporated into the student’s IEP goals and objectives.
  • Training will be available to school personnel and family members once an appropriate device is acquired.
  • If the device is also to be used at home, family members must be trained in the use as well.
  • Consultation is provided on an ongoing basis as needed.
     

Como Hablar de Tecnologia Asistente en el IEP

  • El equipo de IEP debe considerar si hay cualquier posibilidad de que un estudiante pueda necesitar AT.
  • Una vez que artefactos y servicios de AT han sido considerados apropiadamente para un estudiante, el equipo de IEP recomendara una evaluacion del estudiante para AT por un profesional calificado.
  • Cuando la evaluacion sea completada a la satisfaccion de todos, las recomendaciones resultantes deben declarar la necesidad de artefactos y servicios de AT.
  • Artefactos de AT deben describirse en detalle en el IEP. Servicios de AT tales como entrenamiento, mantenimiento y reparacion de artefactos, debe de tratarse en el IEP.
  • Ademas, el uso del artefacto por el estudiante debe incorporarse en las metas y objetivos del IEP del estudiante.
  • Se hara disponible entrenamiento para el personal escolar y miembros familiares una vez que se haya adquirido un artefacto apropiado.
  • Si el artefacto ha de usarse tambien en casa, se debera entrenar a miembros familiares sobre como usarlo.
  • Consulta sera proveida continuamente segun sea necesario.
