Imperial County After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens Program
Student Well-Being & Family Resources is currently working with Central Union High School District and Brawley Union High School District on a grant application that will serve high school students and their families. The IC ASSETs program will provide after school academic assistance, enrichment, and family literacy and educational services to teens and their families. Students and parents voiced their need for academic programs to assist with homework and test preparation, and special concern for the language and cultural needs of a predominantly Hispanic population. Incorporating feedback received, as well as findings from scientifically-based research, activities were chosen to ensure that students are given the greatest chance of success.
Planned academic assistance programs, led by credentialed teachers and supported by part-time student coaches, include a homework center equipped with computers to provide tutoring and other homework help. California High School Exit Exam preparation, college preparation, and course credit recovery classes will also be routinely offered. Enrichment programs will include a variety of fun and meaningful activities intended to provide youths with opportunities for meaningful involvement, supportive relationships, and skill building -- all components of healthy youth development. Planned enrichment activities will vary throughout the year based on student and family interest but will, for example, include visual and performing arts (e.g., dance, drama, art), physical activities (e.g., soccer, Zumba, team games), computer classes, job readiness and career exploration programs, and programs for the whole family (e.g., cooking, gardening). Family literacy and educational services such as ESL, citizenship, GED, financial, and computer literacy classes will be offered to parents.
Partnerships with community agencies will broaden the variety of resources available to students and their families and further strengthen the IC ASSETs program, providing students and their families with much needed resources and services and improving our community.
