“Imperial Teaching American History” (ITAH)

Overview

The Imperial Teaching American History (ITAH) Grant is sponsored by ICOE and the U.S. Department of Education.  This grant provides teacher participants with excellent professional development opportunities to develop knowledge in American History.  Teacher participants are selected through an application process to undergo a two-year program that includes eight components.  The program runs from summer 2011 throughout 2013.

Teacher participants benefit from the program in many ways.  Teachers increase their academic content knowledge, collaborate directly with University professors and other instructional and technology experts, practice curriculum writing and lesson design, build peer relationships in and out of the classroom, apply their knowledge in classrooms to directly impact students, and receive stipends, free curriculum materials, and an all-expense paid East Coast Tour.

Program Goals

The ITAH program is designed to provide teachers with over 130 hours of professional development in:

  • American History content
  • Curriculum lesson design
  • Peer observations
  • Instructional coaching
  • Technology development
  • Networking
  • East Coast field trip
