Generation Y Overview
Generation Y (Gen Y) is a research-based program designed to infuse technology throughout the school. Students work with teachers to bring effective technology into the classrooms and libraries. The resulting collaboration provides the students with project-based learning and the teachers with on-site, sustainable professional development. The Gen Y program is grounded in methods that have been tested in schools and woven into comprehensive programs. |
The Gen Y program offers a rigorous technology program aligned with state standards. Students are empowered with the skills and resources to implement and sustain school wide technology infusion as they work with the staff. Based on proven results, this model was one of two programs rated “exemplary” by the U.S. Department of Education’s Expert Panel on Educational Technology.
Gen Tech Overview
The goal of this course is to develop life long-learning skills in addition to advanced technical skills. The program is designed to provide a rigorous curriculum for a class or group of independent study students who are supporting the school hardware, software, and network infrastructure.
Having students run a computer network or fix hardware in a school is not a trivial task. It goes well beyond the A/V club we all remember. It takes commitment to service, understanding and flexibility. It takes being tuned into the educational goals and culture of the school. Above all, it takes valuing the learning community over the technology.
Through the Gen Tech program, students will meet standards of excellence and become valued members of the school learning community, all while learning advanced technology skills. This course is based on competency learning and "world of work" characteristics, such as communication, collaboration, and project planning. These so called "soft skills" are crucial to the workplace of the 21st century.
