Through a grant from the Families and Youth Services Bureau, ICOE Student Well-Being and Family Resources is touching the lives of children in the Imperial County who have a parent incarcerated in a state or federal institution. These children between the ages of four and fifteen are matched with a screened and trained adult volunteer mentor to support the need for a trusting and supportive relationship. A caring adult mentoring relationship can provide stability and can have a profound, life-changing effect on a child. In fact, of those involved in the Mentoring Children of Promise program, participants find that mentoring not only has a positive impact on the lives of the children, but improves the lives of the mentors as well.
To date, we have identified over 250 children in the Imperial Valley who are eligible for the Mentoring Children of Promise grant. We welcome those who have a commitment to children to join our efforts by volunteering just four hours a month as a mentor. Those interested may call 312-6498.
