Local students and service providers shared their success stories at the 7th Annual Interagency Youth Conference, Tuning In To The Needs Of Youth, held Oct. 29th. Two young men who grew-up in Imperial County shared how they steered their lives in positive directions. Both young men credited local youth programs and services for assisting them in overcoming the odds and helping them to begin productive, meaningful lives.
Alejandro Gaytan was involved in gangs, drug use, and violence as a teenager. He is now a Case Manager for IVROP’s Steps of Success (SOS) Program. How did he make this big change? In his words, “Something happened to make me reevaluate my life and where I was headed. Once I realized it had to change, there were programs and people to help me.” His passion and sincerity captured the attention of the entire room.
DeAngelo Singh, a victim of domestic violence, shared the story of his family and how they have overcome violence with the support of others. De Angleo is now a Teen Center Coordinator for IVROP and plans to continue his outreach to troubled youth. In addition to his work with youth, he is also an aspiring rap music star. He recently released a CD with rap music songs of encouragement for youth.
Loyal Frazier, also a keynote speaker, teaches at Southwest High School in El Centro. His “Ten Tips for Communicating with Teens” used humor to encourage young people and adults to develop healthy communication habits.
The 152 people attending included 33 youth and 119 representatives of youth service providers from all over the valley. In addition to the keynote speakers mentioned above, participants could choose to attend session on topics ranging from drug and gang awareness to Family Resource Centers and health issues.
Youth attending the conference offered positive comments about their experiences. “Yes, this has been a good day. I am learning.” “The sessions were great; if anything needs to change it is my attitude…it needs to improve. Everything has been good.”
The Local Coordinating Council and the Interagency Steering Committee sponsor the conference in collaboration with the Imperial County Office of Education’s Student Well-Being and Family Resources Department. Conference organizers and presenters from various local agencies and non-profits all work toward a common goal of improving life for the youth of Imperial County and are assisted by many local businesses who make contributions.
