Yazmin Arellano living her dream

By DARREN SIMON, Staff Writer

Brawley - When Yazmin Arellano was growing up she knew she wanted to attend college thanks to the influence of her parents.

The Mexicali native who moved to Calexico when she was 14 years old set herself on her path to realize both her and her parents’ dreams.

She attended Calexico High School, took advanced placement classes, worked hard and did well.

She applied to three colleges and was accepted to each. The one she chose was Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Today not only does she have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Cal Poly, she has a master’s degree in industrial engineering and in business administration from CETYS in Mexicali.

“It has a lot to do with reaching your goals,” Arellano said.

“It was a goal to make my parents proud,” she said. “It’s a sense of accomplishment.”

Once Arellano earned her bachelor’s degree she returned to the Valley, making the decision to take her skills and put them to use in the Valley.

The Valley is where she lives with her husband and their two children.

The Valley is where she works as public works director for the city of Brawley.

Arellano said getting a higher education was an important decision and that each day gives her a sense of pride.

She said no matter what difficulties an individual may have in life, whether they have financial concerns or are working to build their English skills, they can be overcome.

She said anyone can go after a college education if they are willing to work for it.

She added you can get farther in life if you pursue a higher education.

“Life in the work environment is very hard without an education,” Arellano said. “The more education you get the better off you will be.”
