San Diego State University-Imperial Valley campus is planning to add nursing and computer science to its list of undergraduate majors. Janet Shumaker, SDSU-IV professor of English, said both programs are still awaiting approval but she anticipates the nursing program and computer science program will commence in fall 2007 and fall 2008, respectively. Like other SDSU-IV programs, Shumaker said students will be able to start the two new programs during their first two years at Imperial Valley College and complete the programs at SDSU-IV in Calexico. Shumaker, who wrote the Title V grant applications that will help fund the new programs, said SDSU-IV has hired a computer science professor already teaching the degree program’s prerequisite classes.
Shumaker said a bachelor of science in nursing is in demand because a BSN degree is required of registered nurses who would like to move into management positions.
Nursing and computer science were chosen as new programs from a list that included possible majors like social work and engineering because surveys of Imperial Valley College students and local employers indicated these two majors were most in demand, Shumaker said.
SDSU-IV offers bachelor’s programs in English, history, liberal studies, public administration, international business, Latin American studies, mathematics, social science, Spanish, business administration and criminal justice.
