Technology has the capacity for opening new worlds and experiences for students that would otherwise not be possible," says Tony Lambert. "There is a wealth of educational resources and tools available for teachers and students."
The Heber Elementary School District is fortunate to have a technology leader with a passion for teaching students. Tony Lambert, a fifth grade teacher, has integrated various technologies into his classroom teaching to support his students’ learning and the state curriculum.
Seeking new and cutting-edge technologies, Mr. Lambert has kept current on the latest innovative resources such as videoconferencing. As a TechLeader for the district, he has been instrumental in arranging educational distance learning opportunities for students. In March, students in his classroom joined millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the joy of reading - in celebration of the birthday of Dr. Seuss. This nationwide reading party was part of "Read Across America," sponsored by the National Education Association and by many of America’s leading literacy, youth, and civic groups.
Mr. Lambert has been an instrumental member of the Heber Technology Leadership Team. Under his leadership, the district has updated their technology plan to meet the requirements of both the state and of No Child Left Behind. The district received Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) funding to support the technology and professional development at the site.
Students in his classroom recently completed a learning unit entitled "Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego?" where students used classical and modern research technologies to learn about United States geography, history, and culture. The well-known "Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego?" software program was used along with the Internet and library resources to support the learning unit. Students were actively participating in the lessons conducted during the school day.
"I opened the computer lab at 7:00 A.M. to allow extended computer access and students’ learning because they were so excited," related Mr. Lambert. Students created multimedia presentations and databases to share what they learned in support of the Social Studies standard.
Selected students and Mr. Lambert recently participated in the 2003 California Student Technology Showcase in Anaheim. Student teams from across California showcased their technology projects to educators, to legislators, and to the public.
