Teachers are Continual Learners

Being a teacher is an expression of a love to learn. Imperial County teachers have had lots of opportunities to learn this summer.  Several programs have been offered through various grant projects and the Imperial County Office of Education.  One of the single largest programs ever offered in Imperial County provided teachers from all over the county with the tools they need to help improve student achievement.  A total of 757 teachers in kindergarten through twelfth grades attended one of three week- long sessions this summer as part of a professional development program made possible by California Assembly Bill 466.  Teachers focused their learning on the state adopted (K-8) or local board approved (9-12) instructional materials their district chose to implement in mathematics and/or reading/language arts.

The Imperial County Office of Education was approved by the State Board of Education as a training provider.  ICOE has offered this professional development to Imperial County teachers for the past three summers.  This was the largest group yet.

Delving into the textbooks and teacher edition’s, teachers learned how to use the texts to the best advantage for their students.  The teachers spent 40 hours this summer and will spend an additional 80 hours during the year continuing to learn and work together.  The professional development provided by AB 466 is the first time that teachers have had the opportunity to be thoroughly trained in the use of their instructional materials.  This gives teachers a chance with a trainer and their colleagues to learn how to ensure that their students are receiving a rigorous education that is aligned to the content standards.  Administrators also attended to support and learn with their teachers and improve their own ability to assist and supervise teachers as they implement the textbooks.

Participants appeared to be avid learners and as one participant said:  “I’ve gotten some really good ideas from the presenters and my other colleagues.  It’s good to have the opportunity to clarify and get on the same track with the other teachers concerning the textbook before we start a new year.”
